TRADITIONAL MAORI MEDICINE

What is Rongoā Māori?

Rongoā Māori is more than a treatment. It is a relationship with ourselves, our people, our whenua and the natural world.

OUR ROOTS

Rongoā Māori is the traditional Māori system of healing and wellbeing, grounded in mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), whakapapa, tikanga and our connection to te taiao (the natural world). Knowledge passed down through generations continues to guide the way we care for ourselves, our whānau and our communities.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH –

Te Whare Tapa Whā

Rongoā Māori recognises that wellbeing is interconnected. Tinana (physical), hinengaro (mental and emotional), wairua (spiritual) and whānau (family and relationships) all contribute to our overall hauora. When we nurture these connections, we support balance and wellbeing within ourselves.

THE PRACTICES - Ngā Mahi

Rongoā Māori includes a range of traditional practices, each with its own purpose and knowledge. These may include mirimiri and romiromi (bodywork), rongoā rākau (plant-based preparations), karakia, kōrero and mahi wairua. The approach is guided by tikanga, mātauranga and the needs of the individual.

These are the practices we use, however there are far more that come in under the rongoā umberlla like taongoa puoro, kapa haka and beyond.

THE INTENTION – Te Whakaora

At its heart, Rongoā Māori is about nurturing connection, restoring balance and supporting wellbeing. It reminds us that we are connected to ourselves, our whānau, our whenua and the natural world. It is more than a treatment; it is a way of caring for ourselves and one another.

At PIKO BU, we honour these traditions through our mahi. We offer a space to arrive as you are, be heard, reconnect with your tinana and nurture your hauora.

Rongoā Māori is best felt, not just explained.

It holds an important place in our relationship with te taiao and the knowledge passed down through our tīpuna.
